After the German Invasion of Czechoslovakia, Dr. Malcharek was forced into the German army at the age of 13, where he drove tanks along the front lines. He was captured by the Russians and spent time in a Russian POW camp. Following the war, he immigrated to the U.S., where he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served as a combat engineer.
